Flags of this design became known as the Van Dorn Pattern, as they were issued to units serving under the command of Major-General Earl Van Dorn in the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederacy in the western theatre. The flags were issued from June ; September 1862, although some historians believe that the Van Dorn pattern flag was carried at the Battle of Pea Ridge in March of 1862.
