North Carolina Militia Guilford Courthouse FlagThe Guilford Courthouse banner was reported to have flown at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15th, 1781, in what is now Greensboro North Carolina. The design of the flag is distinct in that the colors are reversed from the way they are normally seen on American flags. The stripes are blue on a red field while 13 blue, eight-pointed blue stars appear on an elongated white canton (upper hoist-end corner). The unusual color pattern and dimensions were believed by some to indicate a poorly organized new nation at war, with less than desirable infrastructure and communication skills. But others would say that it was commonplace for military units to use flags with American icons like stars and stripes and make them easily identifiable as company or regimental flags to avoid battlefield confusion. The Battle itself was a technical victory for the British, however, out of a 2,100-man force led by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis, they suffered more than 500 casualties which amounted to about 27% of their total force. Major General Nathanael Greene;s force of 4,500 Americans suffered only around 300 casualties. These were casualties that the British could not afford to lose and Cornwallis decided to march to Virginia thus ceding North Carolina and most of the remainder of the South to the Continental Army. So even though the battle was a loss for the Americans, it was a turning point in the war as it led to the loss of control of more territory by the British eventually making it impossible to keep the colonies under their rule. The original Guilford Courthouse flag still exists today and is in the custody of the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh where it has been since 1914.This flag is a reproduction that closely resembles the Guilford Courthouse flag.
