Because the Mexican government was concerned about a Texas rebellion, Mexican troops were sent to recover a cannon that had been furnished to the town to fight off occasional Indian attacks. In a display of defiance, the Texans, refusing to be disarmed, fired on the Mexican troops, compelling them to withdraw. The Gonzales flag has become a popular symbol of second amendment rights nationwide and other variations of the design have since been created.
