Orr;s South Carolina Rifle Regiment Battle FlagThe 1st South Carolina Rifles also known as Orr;s Rifles was organized at Camp Pickens, Sandy Springs in July of 1861 by Colonel James Lawrence Orr and consisted of ten companies and a total of about 1500 men. Although they wore the green-trimmed dark blue uniforms typical of a rifle regiment, they were supplied with smoothbore muskets. Colonel Orr served as the regiment;s commander until January 29th, 1862 when he resigned his commission to serve in the Confederate States Senate. The regiment had seen no action by the time Orr left, but the name ;Orr;s Rifles; stuck throughout the war. First assigned to Sullivan;s Island defending Charleston Harbor, they were referred to as the ;Pound Cake Regiment; in reference to their light-duty and they were so close to home that their families could bring them treats such as pound cakes. In April of 1862, the unit was transferred to Robert E. Lee;s Army of Northern Virginia (ANV) and in June was incorporated into Gregg;s Brigade, of A.P. Hill;s Division under Thomas J. ;Stonewall; Jackson;s Corps. Gregg;s Brigade consisted of the 1st, 12th, 13th, and 14th South Carolina Infantry regiments as well as Orr;s South Carolina Rifles. While attached to the ANV, Orrs Rifles became the first South Carolina regiment to change its enlistment from 12 months to for the war. They fought in nearly all of the major battles in the eastern theatre, including Mechanicsville, Seven Days Battles, Second Manassas, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, North Anna, Cold Harbor, Petersburg Siege, and the Appomattox Campaign as well as several other minor battles and skirmishes. During the war, the regiment lost 334 men killed, 201 dead from disease, and 791 wounded. General Robert E. Lee surrendered the ANV, including Orr;s Rifles, at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. At the time of surrender, the regiment comprised only 9 officers and 148 enlisted men left fit for duty. The regimental flag was made by Mrs. Alexander Mazyck and Mrs. Ellison Capers and presented to the men on October 4th, 1861. The blue field, crescent, and palmetto were made from silk dresses belonging to the two women. Upon being presented with the flag, Colonel Orr was quoted as saying to the color sergeant ;I know this flag will never trail the dust until its folds cover your body;.This is a reproduction of the 1st South Carolina Regiment of Rifles battle flag and is intended to look as the flag would have appeared in 1861.
